Mazama Lodge Work Day

Mazama Lodge Committee and Friends of the Lodge are preparing to get the lodge ready for the big blanket of beautiful snow that will soon cover it.

What does it take to winterize the lodge? Among other things ...

* Installing snow shutters

* Cleaning the bunks

* Installing trail rope 

* Gathering, splitting and stacking firewood

Work will commence at 9 a.m. and last until around 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided to all, and if you want to come up on Friday evening and spend the night there is no charge.

Vote Counting Volunteers

Monday, October 7th

On the date of the Annual Meeting (Oct. 7) the Mazama Nominating Committee needs help counting in the votes that have come in for new Executive Council members.

Vote counters will meet at the MMC at 2 p.m. and it will take 3-4 hours to tally the results.

Contact the Mazama Office if you are available that day to volunteer, 503-227-2345.

And, of course, Vote Counters will be invited to stay for the Volunteer Picnic and Annual Meeting that evening.

BCEP Committee Volunteers

Whether you took BCEP last year or twenty years ago, we want YOU to help run the 2014 course!

The BCEP Committee is looking for enthusiastic new members.

They meet the first Thursday of each month, check out their next meeting on Thursday, September 5th a 6 p.m. at the MMC.

Flexible Schedule

The best way to preserve Mazama history and traditions is to capture the spirit of those who came before us!

Our esteemed Mazama Museum Curator, Vera Dafoe, has been sharing the stories of her 55 years of membership and active involvement in the organization.

These stories are currently recorded on tape and need to be transcribed and stored in the Mazama Archive. If you have confident typing skills and would like to help bring Vera's stories to the world, contact Doug Couch, dougnlis(at)teleport.com

Financial Affairs Committee Members

The Mazama Financial Affairs Committee works with Executive Council and other committees to prepare our annual budgets and quarterly budget reforecasts. The committee also advises Executive Council on financial and accounting procedures or decisions.

The role of the Financial Affairs Committee in the Mazamas is crucial - this group helps our volunteer leadership (which rotates each year) understand the ins-and-outs of the organization's money.

If you have managed an organizational budget before and enjoy providing advice to people on how to track their money and make the most of it, this is the committee for you.

The committee is currently recruiting for committee member positions and for a committee Chair. Both types of volunteers would have the support of the current Chair to train and orient them to the Mazama budget, and ongoing support from other committee members and from Mazama staff.

Mazama Outreach Volunteer

Tell the world what you love about the Mazamas!

Do you find yourself regularly telling your friends, family and perfect strangers about all the good times you have through the Mazamas? If so, the Mazama Outreach Team is seeking outreach volunteers to represent the Mazamas at various community events.

Outreach volunteers will be asked to attend a 1-hour training session on outreach strategies and how to represent the Mazamas in an enthusiastic, professional, positive and engaging way.

The goal of the Outreach team is to increase the visibility of our organization in the community, to create positive relationships with other community groups and to increase participation in Mazama classes and events.

Outreach volunteers get contacted in advance of events and are able to accept or decline opportunities based on their personal preferences and availability.

Office Volunteer

Wednesdays 3-7pm

Office Volunteers keep the MMC running smoothly by providing consistent and efficient support to Mazamas members.

Office Volunteers spend the majority of their time acting as the first point of contact at the organization by greeting visitors; answering phones; responding to voicemails and emails; and managing the central Mazamas calendar. Office Volunteers also handle new membership applications; process dues, climb card and merchandise payments; and do basic bookkeeping for the organization.
Occasionally OV's pitch in to help with special activities and events going on at the MMC.

Volunteers are asked to commit to one 4-hour shift/week, currently we have the Wednesday, 3-7pm shift available.

PSU/PCC Profesor Frank Granshaw is chasing ice!

As published in the Mazama Bulletin, Professor Frank Granshaw is studying the glacier patterns on Washington's Blue, Nisqually and Emmons Glaciers. He is recruiting volunteers with mountaineering and photography skills to lend their hand to this project, collecting photographic data which Frank will put into modeling software to show the changes in these glaciers over time.

Clackamas River Trail Weekend Work Party

June 29th and 30th

The Clackamas River Trail needs more love than we were able to provide at our previous one-day trail work party, so TKO will be returning to the Clackamas River Trail for a weekend work party to address some remaining trail issues. Since the trail is in need of more than routine maintenance, we can use whatever help you can provide. During the work party, we will be removing more logs and rebuilding sections of trail from the Fish Creek Trailhead to Pup Creek Falls.

This weekend work party is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, June 29-30. Volunteers are welcome for one or both days of the work party weekend. The Forest Service has reserved a couple of campsites for us at the Fish Creek Campground if you want to camp out.

All volunteers are welcome - no previous experience is required. The Fish Creek Trailhead is located about a 1 hour drive from Portland. Please sign up here.

Control Noxious Weeds at Mt. St. Helens

Join our partners at the Mount Saint Helens Institute for the 7th Annual Weed Rodeo: stewardship work, live music and an interpretive hike!

Saturday, June 29th marks the 7th Annual Weed Rodeo sponsored by the Mount St. Helens Institute (MSHI) and the US Forest Service. Come help us remove scotch broom and other noxious weeds near Coldwater Lake.

Volunteer registration begins at 10 a.m. at the Coldwater Lake Boat Launch; please bring gloves, boots, long pants, lunch and water.
Hard hats and safety glasses will be provided for the project, which ends at 4 p.m.

Following the Weed Rodeo, volunteers are invited to attend "Music on the Mountain" at Johnson Ridge Ampitheater. The band "Sassparilla" will be providing high energy, vocal harmonies and danceable music for all ages from 6:30-8 p.m. Bring a picnic dinner.

On Sunday the 30th, volunteers are invited for a 9 a.m. guided hike with Monument Scientist Peter Frenzen.

Directions to the Coldwater Lake Boat Launch:  From Interstate 5, take exit 49 (Castle Rock, State Route 504 East) and travel 43 miles east on State Route 504. Follow the signs to Johnston Ridge.  As the road descends to the valley floor, watch for the left turn to Coldwater Lake. Bear left to the boat launch parking lot.

Portland Community College professor Frank Granshaw is training climbers to do panoramic photography and data gathering to begin modeling the activity of Washington's Blue, Nisqually and Emmons glaciers.

The Mazamas Trail Trips Committee is looking for assistance posting its monthly hike schedule.

The Trail Trips Committee uses a custom-built website to plan the hike schedule, but any volunteer comfortable with Windows operating system, internet browsers and basic HTML will be well-equipped to help.

Regular attendance at committee meetings is not required, the volunteer will just need to receive training on the website platform and be in regular communication with the Trail Trips Committee Chairperson in order to update the schedule.

Adventure WILD Day Camp Instructors

Adventure WILD, a benefit for Friends of Outdoor School, is holding two weeks of summer camp out of the Mazama Mountaineering Center.

"At Adventure WILD Summer Day Camp, we believe that authentic learning takes place when children are able to investigate and interact with the world around them. Nature is our playground and children are encouraged to WONDER, INQUIRE, LEARN and DISCOVER about their surroundings. Through thematic and guided activities, with experienced educators your child will laugh, learn and make memories to last a lifetime."

If you have worked with kids before and love to be outdoors, consider putting together a session for Adventure WILD campers: a scavenger hunt, a Leave No Trace lesson, you name it!

Adventure WILD will be hosting an orientation session at the Mazamas at 10am on Friday, June 21st.

Clackamas River Trail Work Party, part two - logout and tread reconstruction!

Mazama Lodge Spring Workday

The annual Lodge Spring Workday is here! It's time to build up our wood pile and take down the snow shutters. Work from 9am-4pm with a free lunch and lodge vouchers for a future stay.

And, join us on Friday, May 31 for a friendly meatball sandwich competition between Chris Johnson and Rick Amodeo. This will be a blind taste test and yes we will have some vegetarian options, too. Dinner will be at 7pm. Price is $12.60

Yard work party at the MMC

It's spring cleaning time at the MMC and we're looking for volunteers to pitch in on landscaping and yard maintenance.

We'll begin work at 9a.m. and work until we finish (12pm at latest), spreading bark dust in the plant beds around the property.

Clackamas Riverside Trail Work Party

Mazama partner Trailkeepers of Oregon (TKO) is hosting a trail work party which will focus on trail restoration and maintenance on the Clackamas Riverside Trail near the Riverside Campground.

Help repair a slide area, fight trail erosion and fix a trail bed which has become overgrown.

The work will be on a 2-mile section of trail starting at the Riverside Campground and heading north.

No previous trail work experience necessary!

The Access Committee is a new group at the Mazamas which will work with local, state, regional and national partners to address access issues throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.
