Library and Archives Assistant

This is an ongoing volunteer position with a flexible schedule

The Mazamas plays an important role in preserving local, regional and national mountaineering history. The Library Committee is in charge of this work, and relies on volunteers to maintain the library, historical archives and museum.

There are a number of ways to get involved in this effort, and the Committee is currently looking for assistants to help sort, catalog and store the new items they receive to the collection. The photos included in this post are examples of the types of items living in the Mazamas historical collections.

The Library and Archives Assistant will be asked to come to the MMC once a week for a two-hour shift, date/time flexible. Training will be provided by the Library Committee on how to use the scanning software and properly document each item.

Experience as an archivist and in mountaineering is a plus; though anyone eager to learn about Mazamas history is encouraged to apply.

eBay Auctioneer

This is a short-term volunteer assignment with a flexible schedule

Deep within the Mazamas archives lie some hidden treasures, waiting to be revealed to the world! Help the Library Committee raise money and clear space for new collections by cataloging and posting some of these gems to eBay.

Volunteer should have some interest in Mazamas historical collections, and experience in selling items on eBay.

This is a short-term assignment lasting until all identified items are sold, though there are additional ways to help out at the library if the volunteer is interested. Volunteer should be available for one day of orientation to learn about the Mazamas archives and the items to be sold, and after that can determine their own schedule within MMC regular business hours (M-Thurs 11-7 and Friday 10-2).

Risk Management Committee Member

The Mazamas Risk Management Committee (RMC) is responsible for upholding this value, by ensuring continuous improvement in the safety and well being of all persons participating in our activities. To do so, the RMC responds to incidents and makes recommendations for preventative measures.

The RMC is staffed by representatives of the various Mazamas activity committees, and is looking for new members!

RMC members should have experience in one or more of the climbing or skiing schools, or in leading outing/expedition groups. Members should also be familiar with risk management best practices in outdoor recreation.

The RMC meets the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the MMC. If interested please contact Sandra Volk, svolk55(at)gmail.com.

Founded in 1894 at the summit of Mt. Hood, the Mazamas is the oldest and most active mountaineering club in the Pacific Northwest! What's even more amazing than all the hikes, climbs, ski tours and expeditions we log is the fact that all Mazamas activities are volunteer-led. Nordic Instructor Orientation Meeting

Tuesday, December 4, 7pm at the MMC 

Are you as excited to see the snow as we are? Consider volunteering as a Nordic Instructor for the 2013 season. Mazamas Nordic Committee is seeking volunteer instructors to assist with the course.

Important dates:
• Mandatory Instructor Meeting 12/4/12 at 6:30 at the MMC,
• Attend at least one day of the Instructor Clinic 12/8/12 and/or 12/9/12
• Attend Student Orientation (Meet your Instructor Night) 12/13/12,
• Instruct on Saturdays or Sundays in the month of January.

Instructors may choose to makeup bad weather days in February.

Instructors should have completed Mazama Intermediate level ski class or be recommended to the committee by a Mazama Ski instructor.

Office Volunteer

This is an ongoing volunteer opportunity

Office Volunteers keep the MMC running smoothly by providing consistent and efficient administrative services to support Mazamas members.

Office Volunteers spend the majority of their time acting as the face of the organization by greeting visitors, answering phones and responding to voicemails and emails. Office Volunteers also handle new membership applications, process dues and merchandise payments, and do basic bookkeeping for the organization.
Occasionally, OV's pitch in to help with special activities and events going on at the MMC.

Volunteers are asked to commit to one 4 hour shift/week, current openings are: Mondays: 3-7pm, Tuesdays: 3-7pm, Wednesdays: 3-7pm, Thursdays: 3-7pm

Expedition Committee

Third Tuesday of the month, 7pm

What do you think when you hear expedition? Exploration? Discovery? If these words get your imagination working, consider joining the Mazamas Expedition Committee.

The Mazamas Expedition Committee promotes mountaineering and exploratory expeditions through endorsements, sponsorships, and grants. This support is geared toward expeditions into remote mountain environments.

Expedition Committee also organizes presentations to the public by well-known expeditionary mountaineers at various local venues. Most recently the Expedition Committee brought Blake Herrington to the MMC for a presentation on “Ultralight Alpinism”. Join Expedition Committee at their next monthly meeting and become part of the adventure!
