Used Equipment Sale Volunteers

Friday, March 15, 2013

Clear out your gear room! Make way for more! The annual Mazamas Used Equipment Sale (UES) is fast approaching!

This annual event, hosted by Mazamas Trail Trips Committee, is a chance for Mazamas and community members to sell and re-buy quality outdoor gear at terrific prices while benefiting the organization.

UES attracts hundreds of shoppers, and it takes a veritable army of volunteers to run the event.

If you are interested in helping, either with sales floor setup (Thursday, March 14), running the event itself (Friday, March 15) and/or supporting post-sale efforts (Saturday, March 16), please visit the UES Volunteer Website to see shift and task descriptions, and to sign up.

For more information about the UES itself, please visit the event page on the Mazamas website.

Climb Consultants

Ongoing

The Mazamas office regularly receives phone calls and emails from community members and out-of-towners alike looking for advice about climbing conditions, equipment, routes and the like. Our excellent Office Volunteer team can answer many of these questions, but seeks support volunteers to be on-call to forward some of these inquiries to.

If you are a climbing enthusiast with extensive knowledge about the peaks, conditions and routes of our surrounding mountains; and are willing to field messages from curious climbers, please let us know so that we can put you on a call/email list.

Contact Kati Mayfield, kati(at)mazamas.org if available.

2013 Round the Mountain Coordinator

Have you been “Round the Mountain” (RTM)? This three-day event, held over Labor Day weekend each year, leads Mazamas on the Timberline Trail around Mt. Hood. Guests hike during the day and stay at the Mazama Lodge overnight, enjoying comfortable lodging, great food and camaraderie of fellow Mazamas members.

Trail Trips Committee seeks someone to plan and coordinate the 2013 Round the Mountain.

Candidates should have experience with event planning and management and should be fans of the Mazama Lodge. Having participated in past RTM events is a benefit, but not necessary.

2013 Round the Mountain will be held over Labor Day weekend (August 31-Sept. 2).

You will receive guidance from previous years’ RTM Coordinators. Contact Sojo Hendrix, sojo42(at)gmail.com if interested.

Trail Trips Hike Leader

This is an ongoing volunteer opportunity

Trail Trips Committee is recruiting new Hike Leaders! Our hike leaders keep the Trail Trips program full, offering over 900 hikes, rambles and trail trips each year.

By volunteering to lead hikes, rambles, snowshoes, backpacks, car camps and trail tends, you are making a valuable contribution to the Mazamas. Often, Hike Leaders are the first and sometimes the only face of the Mazamas to the public and to potential new members.

Leading Trail Trips activities is a way to choose your own destinations and dates. Added bonuses are getting to participate in Trail Trips activities without paying fees, receiving a "Hike Free" card from Trail Trips committee for each activity you lead, and qualifying for a number of Trail Trips recognition awards once certain milestones are reached.

In order to become a Trail Trips leader you must be enthusiastic about hiking, read the Trail Trips Leader Manual, have been certified in basic First Aid, and lead a provisional hike under a Mazamas Hike Leader.

If interested, and to get more information, contact David Zeps, davidz24130(at)gmail.com or 503-638-5430.

AYM Hike and Activity Leader

Ongoing

AYM hike and activity leaders lead hikes, snowshoes, cross country ski days, backpacks, car camping trips, and other related activities.

The goal of AYM is to get more people in their 20’s and 30’s involved in AYM and the Mazamas, so if you would like to meet new people, and lead fun activities, become an AYM hike/activity leader.
AYM leaders get to lead as many hikes or activities to wherever they wish, as long as they commit to leading one activity per quarter.

The AYM leaders must be members of the Mazamas and have minimum basic first aid.

If you are interested in learning more about the opportunity, contact the AYM committee at aym(at)mazamas.org.

Friends of the Lodge

This is an ongoing volunteer opportunity

Train the Trainer

Saturday, February 2 at the MMC

Do you have education or training background?
Would you like to contribute to our club?

The Mazamas Education Committee is looking for a few members to help improve the quality of training and education presented by our club.  We are seeking people to help prepare climbing, activity and class instructors to become more effective and confident through our "Instructor Training Clinics" (ITCs).

FYI: The next ITC is Sat, Feb. 2nd at the Mazama Mountaineering Center, (9a - 2p). Prospective new team members are welcome to come and observe, and see if this is a good fit.  (Please contact Lee Stevenson, lstevenson60(at)gmail.com, so a good time window can be planned.)

The curriculum* has been written and successfully presented several times, but we would like to broaden the presentation and support team.  (*available for review)

These “Instructor Training Clinics” are only offered a couple times a year, so the time commitment is not huge. And, your technical climbing skills, climbing resume, and level of training are not a prerequisite. But we are looking for a few dynamic, upbeat individuals to join this team of educators. (Lee M. Stevenson, Reuel Kurzet & Daniel Mick)

There are several ways you might contribute: Be an editor / proof reader of documents; help create, revise or edit our lessons & activities; come and critique the presentation; Tech \ AV Support; tally feedback sheets; and of course, be part of the Presentation Team.

If you have questions or want more details on this program to strengthen the instruction in BCEP and other Mazama programs, you may contact Lee Stevenson (C: 541-604-4300; E: lstevenson60(at)gmail.com).
